We’re not a good journalism town

This is a headline on the Chicago Tribune’s web site right now: “Mark Dantonio has lofty goals for Michigan State: Big Ten title, BCS bowl.”

I mean, sure, those goals may be hard to achieve, but aren’t those the whole reason you play the game? According to the Chicago Tribune’s editors, maybe not.

If that were a baseball statistic, people would be crying foul and complaining about steroids. Instead, it’s the number of hot dogs eaten in each year by the winner of the annual Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest.

I, for one, refuse to recognize any result greater than Kazutoyo “The Rabbit” Arai’s 24.13 hot dogs eaten in 2000.
